Few GOP women picked for (party) leadership spots

After getting thumped among female voters last week, Republicans returned to Washington knowing they have to narrow the gender gap to prevent another drubbing in 2014 or 2016.

But in their first official action, the House and Senate GOP chose four women lawmakers out of 14 spots for senior leadership positions. The numbers underscored the party’s struggles to recruit and promote top women at a pivotal moment for their party.

Meet Gubernatorial Candidate Ken Cuccinelli, Virginia’s Todd Akin

By Josh Israel on Dec 3, 2012 at 10:58 am

cuccinelli tea party

Virginia’s Republican Party appears poised to nominate state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to be its candidate for governor in 2013 — embracing a man whose extreme political views bear striking resemblance to those of unsuccessful 2012 Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO).  Ken Cuccinelli II has been, in the words of the Washington Post’s editorial board, “the most overtly partisan attorney general in Virginia’s history.”  If elected, the war on women will be alive in Virginia for years to come.  Cuccinelli admits his own blunt style can be “cold-blooded.”  Inevitably, Cuccinelli will have to move to the center on at least some issues temporarily to get elected, just like Gov. McDonnell, who changed from anti-abortion, anti-women crusader and Pat Robertson acolyte to a “Bobs for Jobs,” son-of-northern-Virginia pragmatist.

war on women graph with elephant

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s entire career has been an exercise in trying to reduce and deny women access to care.  He has co-sponsored “personhood” measures that would give full legal rights to fertilized eggs, supported defunding Planned Parenthood, and was the first attorney general to file a lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act (ACA)—on the same day the bill was signed into law.

Now, he’s trying to find ways to deny women access to birth control by letting your boss decide whether you get coverage through the ACA. What’s outrageous is that he is saying that employers who want to deny women access to birth control should engage in civil disobedience.  Nearly 1.4 million women in Virginia are potentially at risk of losing coverage if Cuccinelli has his way.  (MLK said of health care inequality: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.”)

(CNN) — The Violence Against Women Act has protected crime victims and helped police and prosecutors take violent criminals off our streets for nearly 20 years. After it became law in 1994, it was reauthorized, with robust support from both parties, in 2000 and 2005.

Republicans played a prominent role in crafting the act, and particularly its protections for undocumented crime victims. But this time around, House Republicans are blocking its reauthorization and proposing a dramatic and dangerous rollback in its protection for immigrant victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.

A new report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) shows conclusively that the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is working to reduce intimate partner violence. According to the report, “Intimate Partner Violence, 1993-2010,” there has been an astounding 64 percent decline in intimate partner violence from 1993 to 2010. Since it became law in 1994, VAWA has surely played a critical role in this remarkable decline.

Prominent Senator Ties VAWA To Gun Violence

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/30/patrick-leahy-vawa-gun-violence_n_2583458.html

Addressing panelists including NRA president Wayne LaPierre, Leahy said statistics show that women in the U.S. are killed “at alarming rates” by domestic abusers with guns, but in states that require background checks for handgun sales, 38 percent fewer women are shot by their partners. He asked one panelist, Baltimore Police Chief Jim Johnson, whether universal background checks would have a significant effect on keeping guns away from domestic abusers. Currently, background checks are not required by private gun sellers or at gun shows.

“Absolutely,” Johnson said. “Statistics show that when females are killed, it’s more likely, over 50 percent of the time, to be by a spouse or household member. A gun in a home where there is a history of domestic violence, statistics show that there is a 500 percent increase of chance that that person will be victimized by gun violence.”

When it comes to the Violence Against Women Act, it’s really quite simple: There is no room for violence against women anywhere in our society. Not now – and not ever, said Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

While we are mired in gridlock over a bill that has always been bipartisan, each day 600 women are raped or sexually assaulted, while three women are murdered by a husband, boyfriend, or partner. It has to end!

The costs of intimate partner violence exceed $5.8 billion each year, $4.1 billion of which is for direct medical and mental health care services much of which is paid for by the employer. The annual cost of lost productivity due to domestic violence is estimated as $727.8 million with over 7.9 million paid workdays lost each year.

Trans-vaginal Ultrasound McDonnell Quietly Takes Major Step Against Women’s Reproductive Health and Rights

Bob McDonnell Quietly Certifies Revised Abortion Clinic Regulations

Gov. Bob McDonnell has certified health regulations that impose strict hospital construction standards on Virginia abortion clinics — triggering the next step in a multitiered approval process that could make the revised rules permanent by this summer.  These are some the most extreme state anti-abortion laws in the country, according to women’s health advocates.

Unlike the public relations ballyhoo that accompanies many executive actions, McDonnell, an anti-abortion Republican, certified the regulations and had them posted to the Virginia Town Hall website without a public announcement on the Friday between the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, when few people in Virginia are paying attention.

. . .

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II (R) threatened each member of the Virginia Board of Health into applying these unfair construction code rules onto existing women’s healthcare clinics. Among other things, he told them that each member would end up personally paying for any legal bill resulting from litigation challenging the rules.

New Front in the War on Women

Jan 31, 2013 | By ThinkProgress

A record number of new abortion restrictions — 135 in all — were put in place during 2011 and 2012. The GOP nominated someone who has advocated for so-called “personhood” measures and co-sponsored a bill to redefine rape as their vice presidential candidate. Republican senatorial candidates made highly offensive and inexplicable comments about rape. All of this and the numerous other assaults on women’s health help explain why the 2012 election featured a historic gender gap.

Now Republicans are starting off 2013 with another major anti-abortion push in the states. This time the push is around so-called “fetal heartbeat” bills — bills that attempt to ban abortion as soon as a fetal heartbeat can be detected. This means abortion could be banned after just six weeks, which is before many women even know they are pregnant.

ThinkProgress’ Tara Culp-Ressler rounds up just the latest unconstitutional effort to restrict access to abortion:

– OHIO: Anti-choice lawmakers in Ohio first advanced a heartbeat bill in 2011. After the measure was stalled in the state senate for over a year, abortion opponents pressured the legislature to take up the issue again during their lame duck session after the 2012 elections. But ultimately, the bill didn’t come up for a vote because the state Senate leader, Tom Niehaus (R-OH), acknowledged it was too controversial even among abortion opponents. Niehaus said he wanted to wait until lawmakers anti-choice communityreached consensus on the measure — which means it could be back on the agenda sometime this year.

– MISSISSIPPI: About a week into the new year, GOP lawmakers in Mississippifiled a fetal heartbeat bill virtually identical to the one that failed to make it out of committee during the state’s last legislative session. Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) has already made it clear that he would sign such a bill if it ever reaches his desk. At a private anti-abortion event at the beginning of January, the governor confirmed that he supports banning abortion as soon as a fetal heartbeat can be detected. “It would tell that mother, ‘Your child has a heartbeat,’” Bryant said.

– WYOMING: About two weeks ago, state Rep. Kendell Kroeker (R) introduced a measure to supersede the medical definition of viability. Current state law says abortions are prohibited after a fetus has “reached viability,” and Kroeker sought to replace those words with “a detectable fetal heartbeat.” The Republican lawmaker said the idea for his heartbeat bill just came to him one day because “it became clear that if a baby had a heartbeat, that seemed simple to me that it’s wrong to kill it.” On Monday, a House panel struck down Kroeker’s bill because it was too medically vague. But if Ohio and Mississippi are any indication, this likely won’t be the last time that fetal heartbeat legislation shows up in Wyoming.

– ARKANSAS: Republicans in Arkansas also hopped on the fetal heartbeat train this week, but they went a step further — state Sen. Jason Rapert’s (R) proposed heartbeat bill would prosecute the doctors who perform abortionsafter the arbitrary cut-off with a Class D felony, punishable by up to six years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. And thanks to the strong Republican majorities in Arkansas’ legislature, this piece of legislation has a good chance of advancing. It easily passed out of committee on Wednesday and is now headed to the state Senate, where 19 of the chamber’s total 35 members have already signed onto it as co-sponsors.

– NORTH DAKOTA: Like Arkansas, the anti-choice politicians in North Dakota want to prosecute the doctors who perform abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected — and their heartbeat ban was part of the “flurry” of anti-abortion bills that lawmakers rushed to introduce around last week’s Roe v. Wade anniversary. A House committee is currently considering the measure, along with an even more radical “personhood” proposal. North Dakota has already imposed some the most restrictive anti-abortion laws in the nation, and women’s health advocates in the state warn that the passage of these new bills “would be tantamount to banning abortion” altogether.

Demand that the President of the California Republican Assembly resign immediately for her offensive comments on rape.

On Friday, March 1, head of the California Republican Assembly Celeste Greig, pictured right with Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), told the media(1) that pregnancies by rape are rare “because it’s an act of violence, because the body is traumatized.” Ironically, she said this while criticizing former Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin for his comments last fall about “legitimate rape.”

I am disgusted by scientifically illiterate Republican leaders attempting to defend rape related anti-choice policies. These uneducated and fanatical politicians attempt to minimize the horrific consequences of rape in order to pursue a twisted political agenda and, in so doing, degrade women along with adding trauma to victims of violent crime.

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) finally passed the U.S. House or Representatives after nearly a year and a half since it expired.  However, 27 members of Congress, all Republicans, voted against it AND against a much weaker version a well:

Republicans who voted against women twice - House-VAWA-08-e1362075007411

The law (VAWA) has been credited with reducing domestic violence by as much as 67 percent in the past two decades.

Why did the GOP-led U.S. House finally approved VAWA?  In November 2012, voters across the country — including millions of women — made their voices heard. They voted against extremism that said we don’t need a minimum wage, and that women don’t need equal pay for equal work or access to emergency contraception. And they voted against a Republican Party leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives that decided the Violence Against Women Act just wasn’t important enough to renew.

Republicans filibustered President Obama’s outstanding nominee — Caitlin Halligan — to fill an urgent vacancy on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.  Once again, Republicans keep putting their own partisan interests above the will of American voters and the health of our system of justice.

Caitlin Halligan is an exceptionally qualified, widely respected and unquestionably mainstream nominee.

————————–

March 6, 2013 — Right now, 11 Republican lawmakers have tacked their names on to a legal brief in support of Hobby Lobby, a major retailer currently suing the Obama Administration. What’s this all about? Hobby Lobby wants to deny its women employees insurance coverage for birth control.

It’s clear that congressional Republicans haven’t stopped their assault on women’s rights — even after a walloping at the ballot box from women voters, where we showed just how much we care about making our own healthcare decisions. Now they’re taking it to the courts and it’s time for us to stand up and fight, or else we could live in a world where our bosses get to make our healthcare decisions.

The fact is: birth control is a personal, medical decision and no politician or employer has the right to dictate how women use it.

At Hobby Lobby alone, the care of thousands of women in 42 states is at risk. And if the courts side with them, that means millions of women face losing basic health coverage. It’s too dangerous for us to sit by and not make our voices heard loud and clear.

House Republicans Propose Rolling Back Access To Birth Control To Avert Government Shutdown

By Tara Culp-Ressler on Mar 5, 2013 at 3:30 pm

<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />
Republicans Finally Get Their Austerity, And Now They Want More

In order to avert a government shutdown later this month, Congress and the Obama administration must negotiate a continuing resolution to maintain federal funding — and a group of House Republicans is suggesting that deal should also roll back Obamacare’s effort to expand women’s access to affordable contraception.

The automatic spending cuts that will take effect under sequestration will already compromise programs that disproportionately impact women, including slashing $86 million from critical family planning and reproductive health services. But that’s not enough for Republican lawmakers, who want to use the upcoming budget negotiations as yet another opportunity to keep attacking women’s health:

GOP lawmakers reintroduced a bill Tuesday to repeal the contraception mandate. They also pressed their party’s leaders to roll back the provision as part of a continuing resolution later this month to keep the federal government operating.

“This attack on religious freedom demands immediate congressional action,”the 14 lawmakers wrote. “Nothing short of a full exemption for both nonprofit and for-profit entities will satisfy the demands of the Constitution and common sense.”

The continuing resolution that House appropriators released Monday would not cut off funding for the Affordable Care Act, despite years of conservative pressure to defund the healthcare law. But Tuesday’s letter, led by Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.), indicates that fights over the health law could still roil the funding debate.

Obamacare’s birth control provision, which went into effect on August 1, helped eliminate the gender-based disparity in health costs by eliminating co-pays for women’s contraceptive services. Studies have proven that increasing access to cost-free birth control lowers the rates of unintended pregnancy and abortion, as well as provides women with greater economic autonomy to achieve their personal financial goals. Nevertheless, right-wing Obamacare opponents misconstrue the law as a threat to religious freedom, despite the fact that it already contains an exemption for faith-based organizations that oppose covering contraception.

Despite Republicans’ insistence that Obamacare is an affront to religious liberty, most Americans don’t agree. A diverse coalition in support of the health reform law’s expanded access to contraception — including religious groups like Catholics for Choice, Jewish Women International, the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, the United Methodist Church, and the Unitarian Universalist Association — is already urging the U.S. House Committee on Appropriations to reject a deal that would restrict women’s access to birth control.

Unfortunately, Rep. Black is no stranger to targeting women’s health. So far this session, she has also introduced a measure to defund Planned Parenthood, as well as called for an unnecessary government study to justify her continued effort to strip funding from the women’s health organization.

100 Years Of Women’s Rights

February 28th, 2013 7:24 pmAllison Brito

Sunday, March 3 will mark the 100-year anniversary of the Woman Suffrage March on Washington by brave women demanding the right to vote. The fight for women’s rights didn’t begin in 1913; in fact, the movement had over 50 years of history prior to this momentous event led by the National American Woman Suffrage Association.

Two prominent women in American history—Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton–fought to give women the right to vote.

On March 3, 1913, led by American suffragist activists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, men and women from across the country met in Washington, D.C. to march down Pennsylvania Avenue in support of women’s rights.  The marchers were heckled, insulted and ridiculed.  The police ignored orders to protect the marchers; men who supported the movement were targeted as well.

From groups who resisted the movement came unrelenting assaults on women’s femininity—painting them as either lesbians or unattractive, lonely women incapable of finding husbands. Such misogynist propaganda infiltrated the news, portraying suffragists completely unfairly. Opponents claimed that women should remain out of politics and find a man to speak for them, since allowing women into the political process would be detrimental to the state.

Koch Brothers Revel In Sequester

March 5th, 2013 3:26 pmHenry Decker

Although everyone from President Barack Obama toHouse Speaker John Boehner has lamented the negative impact of the $85 billion budget sequestration, at least two major Washington figures are thrilled about the severe cuts. For Charles and David Koch, the sequester accomplishes the goal that motivated the billionaire brothers to help launch the Tea Party movement in 2010: weakening the federal government. And now that the cuts have begun to take effect, the Koch brothers are reveling in their success.

Americans for Prosperity, the right-wing dark money group founded by the Koch brothers in 2004, sent out an email to supporters over the weekend claiming credit for sequestration. The email, from AFP President Tim Phillips, claims, “While Speaker Boehner and the GOP deserve credit and thanks for taking a gutsy stand, it’s important to realize what an incredible impact AFP activists like you” have had in convincing Congress to slash the federal budget across the board.

2012 Election: Possible Unintended Consequences of the Republican War on Women

Obama hugs Michelle after historic 2012 win.

Obama hugs Michelle after historic 2012 win.

Women and moms throughout this great country spoke out loud and clear in the 2012 elections.  Among other things, they want the Republican war on women done, over, finished.  The Republican fixation with legislating bedroom issues and lady parts must end, including forced trans-vaginal ultrasound probes; efforts to redefine rape; denying birth-control coverage to low-income women; granting personhood to fertilized eggs; and all extreme, no-exceptions, positions to criminalize a woman’s decision to end a pregnancy.  The message was clear: The government shouldn’t criminalize women’s healthcare decisions; those are best left to her and her doctor.  Period.  “All women deserve respect,” said Rep. Leslie Byrne, the first woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia and a leader of the new Women’s Strike Force PAC.

If you read history, you realize that women and moms have been denied equal opportunity and rights in some way or another for generations, for centuries really.  I’ll never forget the frustration in my grandmother’s eyes when she told me that her parents told her she couldn’t go to college because of her gender.  It also comes to mind how hard my mother worked as a single mom to raise my brother and me.

Times are changing.  Look below and see how many women were elected into Congress.  Look at the women who have been appointed into the U.S. Supreme Court.

Likely Increase in Births Has Some Lawmakers Revisiting Cuts

By EMILY RAMSHAW / Published: December 7, 2012

. . . State projections being circulated among Texas lawmakers indicate that during the 2014-15 biennium, poor women in the state will deliver an estimated 23,760 more babies than they would have, as a result of their reduced access to state-subsidized birth control. The additional cost to taxpayers is expected to be as much as $273 million.

Ahead of the next legislative session, during which lawmakers will grapple with an existing Medicaid financing shortfall, a bipartisan coalition is considering ways to restore some or all of those family planning dollars, as a cost-saving initiative if nothing else.

Actress Jennifer Aniston responds to Republican attacks against single moms:

Romney v. Romney and “Binders Full of Women”

In last night’s 2nd presidential debate, Mitt Romney refused to say whether he supports the principle of equal pay for equal work for women as more women enter the workforce than ever before and as women make 72 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts.

Avoiding the fact that his fellow Republicans in Congress had already rejected that, instead he said he wanted women in his cabinet in Massachusetts because apparently his people didn’t propose any names of women for cabinet posts and probably thought it wouldn’t be important.  It’s interesting though that he didn’t seem to want women at the mostly-male leadership of Bain Capital (he had only one woman out of 40 leadership positions when he was in charge) or at the olympics.

Anyway, he said at the debate that his people brought him “a whole binder full of women.”  Since many of Romney’s statements need “clarification,” here’re the facts: Romney didn’t ask for the “binder full of women.”  It was created by MassGAP (Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus, made up of some 40 organizations) before he was even elected and presented to him after his election.  MassGAP did the research and put together the binder full of women qualified for all the different cabinet positions, agency heads, and authorities and commissions.  To his credit, Romney appointed 14 women to positions, but none of the senior positions Romney cared about such as budget or business development went to women.

At the debate, he then continued by saying that his female chief of staff couldn’t work late because she had to be home making dinner for her husband and being with the kids when they got back from school.  So Romney proposed flexible schedule for women who wanted to go home early to cook for their husbands.  So here’s a question for Romney: Where has Romney been for the past decade?  Is he aware that there are many families where husband and wife divide the house chores, or where the mom is the main breadwinner?  There are also many families made up of single moms or single dads.  What about them?

Soon after the debate, however, senior Romney adviser Ed Gillespie told the Huffington Post that, Romney “was opposed to (the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act) at the time and would not have signed it.”

When Romney was asked at the debate whether he would consider restricting sales of assault weapons, he suggested that “we need moms and dads helping to raise kids.”  What if the dad is a jerk?  Would he make getting a divorce more difficult?  Is Romney basically saying that we need to eliminate single-parent households to reduce assault weapon violence and ensure that every man gets a home-cooked meal by 6 o’clock?

On Romney’s weapons answer, Wendy Fontaine wrote, “I’m a single mother. A proud one. And Romney’s remarks are ignorant, insulting and based on stereotypes that degrade the hard work single parents do every day.”  Last March, another Republican, Rick Santorum, said that single mothers were ruining the fabric of our country by “breeding more criminals.”  “Ask President Obama,” Fontaine wrote.  “His own mother was a single mom, and she raised him to become president.”

Romney seems to live in some 1950’s sitcom where his wife – who hasn’t worked a day in her life – owns a dancing horse.  The facts are that Romney wants to repeal health insurance reform and destroy Planned Parenthood, both of which are helping millions of women.  Mitt is working to make affordable health care more difficult for women.

In contrast, this is how the president answered the equal pay question: “These are not just women’s issues. These are family issues, these are economic issues, and one of the things that makes us grow as an economy is when everybody participates and women are getting the same fair deal as men are.”  Also he appointed two women to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Republican Obsession with Destroying Planned Parenthood:

Regarding Planned Parenthood, the courts are telling Republican politicians that they can’t kill the organization because it helps too many women.  In October, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Indiana may not deny federal Medicaid funds to Planned Parenthood affiliates in the state.  Abortion services represent just three percent of the care Planned Parenthood provides and thousands of Indiana low-income women depend on the organization for basic health care needs.  This is the second court saying the same thing to Republican politicians.  As the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel editorial board wrote, “Defunding Planned Parenthood to prevent abortions is a lot like outlawing umbrellas to prevent rain.” It doesn’t make sense.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito led the court in the Ledbetter opinion stripping many women of their right to equal pay for equal work. When asked how he would select his Supreme Court appointments if elected, Romney named Alito, along with Roberts, Scalia and Thomas as his models, all of whom voted against Lilly Ledbetter and against equal pay for women.

Romney Lies About Unintended Pregnancies

10/11/2012 – This week, Mitt Romney was dishonest — again.

The Governor told the editorial board of the Des Moines Register: “There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda.”

A few hours later, Romney’s campaign told a conservative news organization: “Governor Romney would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life.”

Romney’s playing politics with issues that directly impact women’s lives.

The real Romney is the one we’ve known for the past six years:

— He said he’d be “delighted” to sign a bill banning all abortions.
— He called Roe v. Wade “one of the darkest moments of Supreme Court history” — and he’s pledged to appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn it the first chance they got.
   — He has supported state constitutional amendments that would redefine life as starting at the moment of conception, banning not only abortions but also some forms of birth control.

Romney’s not flip-flopping, or moving to the middle. He’s making a highly cynical choice, telling his audience whatever he thinks they want to hear — and we can’t let this dishonesty fool voters.

Here’s how the president puts it:

“Mr. Severely Conservative wants you to think he was severely kidding about everything he said over the last year,” Mr. Obama said. “We’ve got to name this condition that he’s going through. I think it’s called Romnesia.”

Proclaiming the benefits of his health care law, the president reassured the crowd that “Romnesia” was curable. “If you come down with a case of Romnesia and you can’t seem to remember the policies that are still on your Web site, or the promises you’ve made over the six years you’ve been running for president,” he said, “here’s the good news: Obamacare covers pre-existing conditions.”

Romney says he wants to create jobs, but wants to do it using a sketchy plan that doesn’t add up.  Instead he and the Republicans want to redefine morality and continue the Republican war on women.

Romney and the Republicans keep lying about Medicare to get the elderly vote.

Can you trust Romney?

http://www.nationalmemo.com/mitts-most-shameless-lie

Romney, Rep. Ryan, other Republican leaders and Roman Catholic bishops are playing with fire when they seek to limit access to birth control/family planning.  Birth control is an economic, a family issue and a civil right issue.  Here’s are the facts:

When Mitt Romney talked about the 47% to a group of rich Republicans donors and said, “My job is not to worry about those people,” he was talking about a whole lot of women.

Tea Party Favorites Rep. Ryan and Senate Candidate Rep. Akin Think Alike

The biggest flip-flop of the 2012 election season may not come from Romney after all, but from Republicans who once bashed Republican Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin.  After the Republican establishment said publicly it wanted Rep. Akin to drop out for speaking the truth about Republican values and his now-infamous “legitimate rape” comment, it has come back to help the candidate big time showing that it was all more about rhetoric than substance.  Not only has Tea Party favorite Rep. Akin been endorsed by major GOP players like Rick Santorum, Sen. Jim DeMint and Gov. Rick Perry, but he is getting major money from the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate from Missouri Rep. Akin remarked in an interview, that women have certain mechanisms in their bodies that would prevent them getting pregnant during a “legitimate rape.”  Never mind the thousands of women who get pregnant every year from rape.

Rep. Akin believes that he has found a litmus test by which we can decide whether a rape truly happened or whether it was a false claim. By Akin’s reasoning, if a woman didn’t get pregnant from the assault, she truly was forcibly raped. However, if she did conceive, then we have reason to believe she is either making a false claim or deep down, truly wanted the sex act.  Amazingly, Rep. Akin currently sits on the House Science Committee (the same one that doesn’t believe in the science behind global climate change and that believes in the need for schools to teach about Adam and Eve and creationism.)  In 2011, at least 32,000 American women were impregnated after being raped “legitimately,” according to Shannyn Moore in a Sept. 12 Op-Ed on SpeakOut.

One of Akin’s Republican supporters, Sharon Barnes, a local Republican committee woman, said that. . .

. . .if a woman is raped and becomes pregnant then God has “blessed this person with a life” that should not be taken.

Republican Congressman Phil Gingrey said women regularly lie about being raped, that they’re able to prevent a pregnancy simply by “being tense and uptight,” and that Todd Akin had a point.

Republican Vice Presidential Candidate Rep. Paul Ryan And Rep. Akin backed a bill – some call it the “Protect Life Act” while others deem it the “Let Women Die Act” – that would allow hospitals to refuse abortion to a woman, regardless of whether her life was in danger.  According to Paul Ryan,. . .

. . .“Rape is another method of conception.”

Just last year, Republican Paul Ryan joined Todd Akin and more than 200 other Republicans in co-sponsoring legislation that would have narrowed the definition of rape, limiting which victims of rape were “legitimate” enough – only forcible rape – to receive financial assistance for access to health care.

Rep. Paul Ryan with Rep. Todd Akin at a press conference in Washington, DC on April 5, 2011 (Photo: Stephen Crowley NYT)

The Republicans’ vice presidential candidate has voted lock step with Akin on this multiple times. Rick Berg the Republican senate candidate from ND voted to make abortion a homicide crime, even in the case of rape. Then there is Republican Mike Huckabee, who argues that. . .

. . .”many wonderful people have been born through rape.”

It was just under the surface when Republican Senator Rick Santorum mentioned “all of God’s children, the born and the unborn” and got the loudest ovation of the evening (at the GOP convention).

Rick Santorum, who famously said women who are impregnated as the result of rape should “make the best of a bad situation” and “accept this horribly created … gift” from God.  Santorum has also said that it’s not in a women’s interest to use contraception.

What is the likely source for GOP Rep. Akin’s somewhat outrageous belief that “legitimate” rapes don’t lead to pregnancy?  A Romney Campaign surrogate, Dr. John “Jack” Willke, who is a controversial but well-known doctor often referred to as “the father of the antiabortion movement.”  In 2007, Romney welcomed Dr. Willke’s endorsement.

Other medical reaction to Dr. Willke’s statements that were used by Rep. Akin?  “There are no words for this — it is just nuts,” Dr. Michael Greene, a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School, told the New York Times.

Some people believe that Ryan, Santorum and Akin are the type of men who would scoff at “date rape” claims.

Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King said, “I’ve never heard of a girl getting pregnant from rape or incest.

In a discussion in the Republican-controlled Kansas state legislature (House) in March 2012 about whether women purchase separate abortion-only policies, . . .

. . . Republican state Rep. Pete DeGraaf suggested women should plan ahead for rape the way he keeps a spare tire.

A few weeks later, Indiana state Rep. Eric Turner, a Republican, said some women might fake being raped in order to get free abortions.

Texas Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Clayton Williams spoke about rape: “If it’s inevitable, just relax and enjoy it.”

According to Pennsylvania Republican Senate Candidate Tom Smith, who believes abortion should be banned for rape, incest and when the life of the mother is at risk: “Pregnancy out of rape is similar to pregnancy out of wedlock,” Smith said.

What about the next Papa Pilgrim who moves his family into the boonies so he can rape his daughters in private? What if he impregnates his daughter? Should she be forced to give birth to her half-brother/son?! Are you SERIOUS? Yes. That’s what Republicans want — abortion made illegal including rape and incest, wrote to Shannyn Moore in a Sept. 12 Op-Ed on SpeakOut.

Rep. Ryan's bill would have allowed a rapist to sue his victim to keep her from ending the unintended pregnancy.

Rep. Ryan’s bill would have allowed a rapist to sue his victim to keep her from ending the unintended pregnancy.

Rep. Akin’s Abortion Position Reflects GOP Platform

There is no policy difference between Akin’s comments and the mainstream newly updated GOP platform.‬  In fact, Akin’s comment only underscores a position many Republicans are trying to codify into law.

The Republican platform calls for a constitutional amendment banning abortion, and some forms of birth control, and makes mention of no exceptions.

The GOP has tried to eliminate abortion coverage from health insurance coverage.  Only rich girls will be able to end a pregnancy

Romney’s running mate has sponsored a controversial federal fetal personhood law that would force rape victims to go through with their pregnancies.  The measure named Sanctity of Human Life Act stated that the “life of each human being begins with fertilization”… at which time every human being shall have all the legal and constitutional attributes and privileges of personhood.”  (By the way, in June 2012, Tea Party U.S. Sen. Rand Paul tried to sneak a personhood amendment into the federal flood insurance bill.)

There are some gruesome rape cases.  There is a case of a woman who was raped at knifepoint for hours.  In Florida, another victim, Anita Law, told The Huffington Post the attack on her when she was a 19-year-old University of Maryland student left her too traumatized to carry out the ensuing pregnancy.  “It ruined my world for a long time,” said Law, now 43.

“If I had had to carry that rapist’s baby to term, quite honestly, I might have taken my life,” said Law.

Law said Akin’s remarks were “a perfect example of why male politicians shouldn’t be legislating women’s bodies.”

The sodomized virgin exception:

A South Dakota Republican leader, Bill Napoli, was straightforward when asked about what kind of rape victim should be allowed to have an abortion:

“A real-life description to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life.”

Pennsylvania ‘Rape Bill’ Withdrawn

After a flood of criticism, a Republican bill that would cut benefits to low-income mothers—unless they could prove their newborns were a result of rape—has been withdrawn.

A Pennsylvania bill that would have limited access to the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families Program by low-income mothers—unless they could prove their newborns were a result of rape—has been withdrawn by the lawmakers who introduced it after a wave of criticism following its announcement.

The bill would have required women to prove they had reported their rapes to authorities. Critics said this was unrealistic—slightly more than half of all rapes go unreported—but also assumes only rapes that are reported to authorities count as rape.

Swanger’s decision to retract the bill comes on the heels of an election season that has seen legislation across the country aimed at curtailing women’s access to reproductive health care, along with controversial anti-abortion commentary from politicians.

Swanger was quick to disassociate herself from remarks like Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock’s assertion that children conceived of rape are an act of God, and Missouri Congressman Todd Akin’s hypothesis that “legitimate rape” blocked unintended pregnancies.

Senate Candidate Todd Akin’s ‘Rape Remarks’ are Emblematic of The GOP

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright wrote the following:

I’ve been fighting for women’s rights my whole career — in the United Nations and as Secretary of State — and in all those years, I’ve never seen a Republican Party and Republican presidential ticket as extreme as this one.

Governor Romney is the standard-bearer of a party that doesn’t think women should have a voice in decisions affecting their bodies, their wages, or their rights.

Perhaps the Republican Party thinks that it’s better for women to have their decisions made for them.

I happen to think that women want to take care of themselves — and control their own bodies and personal health. Women deserve the ability to fight for a fair wage, and to speak out in support of legislation like the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. This shouldn’t be a lot to ask — aren’t we in the 21st century?

This year’s Republican Party doesn’t get that. If you listen to the Republicans, you might think our country’s most dangerous foe is Planned Parenthood.

I honestly can’t understand why any woman or, for that matter, any thoughtful man, would want to vote for Mitt Romney or other Republicans. Wives, sisters, mothers, and daughters would see their lives change for the worse if he’s elected president.

Wisconsin Republican and Tea Party favorite State Rep. Roger Rivard: “Some girls rape so easy.”

A right-wing group that claims to promote “family values” has endorsed a Wisconsin Republican and Tea Party favorite Rep. Roger Rivard who drew widespread criticism for his comment that. . .

“some girls, they rape so easy.”

The Wisconsin Right to Life and Pro-Life Wisconsin have endorsed the Republican.  Some people in his district were especially appalled by Rivard’s comments because they were made so soon after the rape of a 14-year old girl, which made the situation that much more difficult for the victim and those close to her.

Rep. Ryan and State Rep. Roger Rivard who said that “some girls rape so easy.”

Here’s the question I would ask Rep. Ryan:  What is the difference between Rivard’s “easy rape” and Ryan’s idea of non-forcible rape, which he tried to codify into law?

Abortion is the battle, but women’s health is the war.
